I BELIEVE THAT ART SHOULD EVOKE STRONG EMOTIONS FROM THE VIEWER. I LAYER MY PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS IN MYSTERIOUS IMAGERY, INVITING THE VIEWER TO ENTER THE REALM OF DREAM-LIKE SURREALITY. SINCE SURREALISM IN ART IS THE PRACTICE OF CREATING FANTASTIC OR INCONGRUOUS IMAGERY BY MEANS OF UNUSUAL COMBINATIONS, IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT DISPARATE ELEMENTS APPEARING TOGETHER IS THE RULE. THE END RESULT SHOULD MAKE THE WORK SOMEHOW AccESSiBLE. I CHALLENGE THE VIEWER TO LOOK AT MY PAINTINGS AND COME UP WITH THEIR OWN INTERPRETATIONS, BASED ON THEIR OWN PERCEPTIONS OF THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.
BY ASKING WHAT MY PAINTINGS MEAN, PEOPLE ARE EXPRESSING A WISH THAT EVERYTHING BE UNDERSTOOD, ASKING FOR SOME SORT OF ABSOLUTE MEANING. PEOPLE WHO CONSCIOUSLY LOOK FOR SUCH MEANING OFTEN FAIL TO GRASP ITS MYSTERY. IF ONE DOESN'T REJECT THE MYSTERY, THEY CAN HAVE QUITE A DIFFERENT RESPONSE. THEN, THE VIEWER CAN ASK OTHER THINGS OF THE PAINTING. THERE IS, OF COURSE, NO ANSWER OTHER THAN WHAT THE IMAGE MIGHT INVOKE FOR THEM PERSONALLY. IF THE VIEWER THINKS MY PAINTING DEFIES COMMON SENSE, PERHAPS THEy ARE then REALIZING SOMETHING. FOR ME, THE WORLD defies COMMON SENSE.
